Leicester Lions Club has been raising funds to help various local charities for over 60 years.
Projects Chairman Ted Carr says:
“We are pleased to have been able to help Headway Leicester on a number of occasions over more recent times as they provide an excellent service to encourage and improve their clients’ lifestyles. In the current lockdown conditions, we are delighted to add to Headway’s own remote group activities with a bit of extra Christmas cheer for over 90 of their members with a festive tea delivered to each of them.”
Evington based café; Vintage 186 has had the mammoth task of preparing the 90 afternoon teas and will be delivering these over two days across Leicester and Leicestershire. After being approached by the charity back in November, owner Jo-Anne Bonner says:
“January 12th, 2016 was one of the worst days of my life. My son was involved in a horrific
car accident where he suffered life threatening and life changing injuries. He sustained a
traumatic brain injury (TBI) and was in a coma at the Queens Medical Centre. He was later
moved to Brain Injury Unit at the Leicester General Hospital and this is where we met the team from Headway Leicester. They gave us a lot of support and pointed me in the right direction and for this I will be forever grateful. My son still suffers with the effects of the injuries but is making the most of his life”
Headway Leicester would normally cook Christmas lunches for a full week so that they can celebrate and ensure everyone who comes into the day centre can enjoy a traditional Christmas Dinner. 2020 has been very different and despite the challenges of the Pandemic the charity is now supporting many new individuals, including self-referrals as well as family members and carers.
“Lockdown has restricted the brain injury survivors we support to vital rehabilitation and services. Many have attended our new online support at our #DigitalDayCentre and a handful have also been able to access our face-to-face services when we re-opened our day centre in October. After such a hard year we wanted to do something extra special for all our members and cannot wait to celebrate with everyone” says Mary Goulty, Service Director.
All members have been sent an invite to join a special Virtual Afternoon Tea zoom session on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December.
