Day Centre

Support at our Day Centre

Our day service is operated in Leicester City but is available to residents of City, County and Rutland. The day service offers a safe and supportive place at a time when many individuals have lost their confidence.

We provide a range of activities aimed at rebuilding lost skills and maximizing independence. It provides opportunities to meet others with similar experiences; with many people telling us that the peer support is an invaluable of the service.

Self-esteem, confidence and motivation can be seriously affected by a brain injury; therefor the focus of Headway House is “activity”. We encourage everyone to be actively involved in the wide variety of activities on offer:

  • Woodwork including marquetry, woodturning, carving, joining and pyrography
  • Mosaics
  • Arts and crafts including scrapbooking, card making, painting, knitting and wet felting
  • Cookery including use of adaptions for those with physical or sensory impairment
  • Computers including gaming
  • Gardening, growing from seed and we also grow our own fruit and vegetables

At first glance it may not be obvious how participating in these activities can help those recovering from an acquired brain injury but they all make an important contribution to an individual’s rehabilitation.

Members who attend our day centre often say it is the only place that they can ‘feel themselves’ and don’t feel embarrassed to try new things.

The social opportunity is very valuable too; being able to talk to others who have had similar experiences and really understand how you feel is extremely important.

Headway does not want individuals to become dependent upon our support. Members are helped to develop a Personal Development Plan or PDP. We identify the goals an areas of difficulties so that they can be targeted to enable people to ‘move forward’. PDPs are reviewed every three months.

The practice within Headway is to encourage everyone to achieve as much as possible to enable them to move forward from the service. Sometimes this will be into education, voluntary work, paid employment or simply to be able to live independently.
