Platinum Portrayals
Platinum Portrayals is our public exhibition by artists to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee.
Running from Friday 10 June – Thursday 16 June the exhibition showcases the talents of our Headway community who are supported at our Day Service and through our Community Outreach provision.
Many of the artists involved have only taken up painting since we began supporting them. Throughout the pandemic we hosted an array of online art therapy workshops which members such as Sash embraced and found a creative outlet.
Helen Newton, a local artist, has been working with our members on this project, which has been funded by the Arts Council’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund
“Leading the online and in-house Platinum Portrayals workshops at Headway has been an absolute pleasure. Without exception all the members have enthusiastically and actively participated and produced both individual and group work to be proud of.
Sharing memories and researching ‘Royal’ imagery, we have designed Platinum Jubilee cups, mugs and plates, made bunting, bejewelled crowns, decorated silhouettes and been inspired to paint the Queen’s favourite flowers, royal animals, guards and even Buckingham Palace! Everyone has shown remarkable concentration, persistence and great collaborative skills inspired by the Platinum Jubilee.
We are now looking forward to mounting a public exhibition of all the work at Bishop Street Methodist Church in the centre of Leicester from 10 to 16 June”.
Recent statistics released from Headway – the brain injury association found that 86% of people affected by brain injury (survivors and carers) felt that a lack of understanding from society is one of the main challenges to living life with a hidden disability.
Our members may experience a range of difficulties including cognitive, physical, and sensory impairments as well as diminished motivation and a crushing sense of loss and bereavement as they struggle to come to terms with their changed lives.
Headway Leicester helps brain injury survivors come to terms with their injury and the services we offer make use of everyone’s individual abilities whilst motivating them as they re-gain their identity post injury.

Directions
Finding the Church
The Church is on the south side of Town Hall Square, between the Gallowtree Gate and Market Street shopping areas. It is 5 minutes walk from the Railway Station. Pedestrian and cycle access is very easy from all parts of the city centre. Some buses drop off on Horsefair Street on the opposite side of Town Hall Square from the church, many others use the Charles Street bus stops, a short walk away.
Parking
There are metered parking spaces along one side of Bishop Street and metered bays in surrounding streets, up to 3 hrs, or longer-term in various local car parks. There are disabled badge holder spaces and an unloading bay in Bishop Street.
